As you can see from the title of this post, I have welcomed in 2017 by attempting to learn a little bit of German with the helpful web tool Duolingo. Alright, it is a little fudging of the truth – I actually started a few weeks before 2017, but the sentiment still applies. My main reason to learn was to not look like a complete monoglot when I go for an interview next week for a PhD program in Germany (although I will probably sound like a complete idiot when speaking German).
Anyway, I have found Duolingo to be very helpful in teaching a second language and even addictive at times with its “gamification” features (basically a reward system which tunes into your brain’s craving for instant gratification). So, if you wish to learn a new language as part of any New Year’s resolutions, this is probably your best shot at succeeding (for free at least).
