Do you see the cover picture? Is it not beautiful!? That is fynbos: it is one of the most diverse biome’s in the world, existing in a tiny region of South Africa. Quite remarkable! But also exceedingly fragile; like many of the world’s plant and animal species, many fynbos species are threatened by climate change, human development, and invasive species. It is easy to think of these problems in the abstract, something that happens but is not directly connected to you. Science is alike in that respect: it is magnificent and can do wonderful things, though it is also fragile and dependent on people’s correct understanding. Science is like the picture receding into the distance, where there appears to be a mountain to climb and you are never sure if there is a valley along the way, although at every step there is always something to be amazed about.
